Brendan Fraser Gets Standing Ovation At Venice Film Festival

Sometimes the internet surprises people. Occasionally a large group of fans draw attention to a star from their childhood, often one that has seen their career prospects on the downswing. That person becomes the unofficial king of the internet for a period. Tom Hanks, Keanu Reeves, Steve Irwin, and now Brendan Fraser.

Brendan Fraser has been receiving support online from fans who wish to see his career enjoy a renaissance. It appears to have worked. Fraser has a growing list of recent credits to his name in IMDB including a role in Killers of the Flower Moon and Batgirl, which was cancelled for reasons that had nothing to do with him. The reason for the standing ovation is his performance in The Whale.

The movie will not be released until December 9th but it was screened at the Venice Film Festival. In the video above you see a clip of the 6 minute standing ovation he received from the festival audience.

6 minutes!

Brendan Fraser was not a favorite actor of mine when I was young but he was one I enjoyed. My favorites were Encino Man, With Honors, Airheads, Twilight of the Golds, The Mummy, and his small role on the TV show Scrubs.

By the way, if you haven’t seen Scrubs, go look it up and start watching. That show is pure joy.

Anyway, I only recently became aware of what Fraser endured in his career and what may be the unfortunate circumstances of his career struggles. You can read about it elsewhere, suffice it to say that his troubles had nothing to do with his performance onscreen or anything he did off screen. It is wonderful to see some recent successes and three more upcoming projects.

The internet is generally seen as an awful place full of trolls, haters, and those desperately seeking attention. Yet, every so often it surprises you. I noticed a growing number of Fraser posts in forums a year or two ago and while it is likely his career was already on an upswing, I would like to think the popular support gave him a boost.

Cheers to a new example of the internet contributing some positive energy out there. I am eager to watch The Whale and will look out for the Scorsese film Killers of the Flower Moon, where Fraser will join a cast with Leo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro… You read that right.

Cheers Brendan Fraser!
